In Conversation With Emilie Costechareyre
What made you decide to start a brand?
I just couldn't find the jewellery that I wanted to wear, and I was itching to create.
Does your brand have a message?
Yes, for me, everything has a meaning. Elvis et moi is all handmade, in Australia. I buy my supplies as ethically as I can. We use recycled metals when ever it is possible. I am also working on a project on the side, to create another branch of ethically sourced products. I really want to grow a business that involves people, creation, love and emotions.
What or who are your influences?
Everything really. Music, people, friends. I love to sit in a cafe and become an observer. Looking at how people dress, accessories, etc.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your brand?
To delegate, to get help, to work together.
What advice/warnings would you give someone looking to start their own brand?
Be ready to focus on just one thing: WORK. Forget your friends, parties and your savings hahaha. But it is all worth it. When you see your dream unfolding in front of your eyes, all the dots connect.
What are the best and worst parts of your job?
Creating, designing, from a piece of paper to a 3D piece, or from bits and pieces to an earring. I love doing collaborations. I did a collaboration with the wonderful team of Bec and Bridge. I did summer and I am currently working on a winter collection for them. I am so lucky that I met those beautiful girls! they are just amazing! I love every part of my job, but if I have to choose a worst part it would be accounting. Luckily I have a wonderful accountant.
How would you say the fashion/retail climate has changed since you started your brand? Is the change for the better or worse?
In Australia, for the better. Fashion totally evolved here. When I first came 10 years ago, there weren't many brands. Now creativity is everywhere. We have great designers, and people are also risking a bit more. Look at Dion Lee or Romance was born!
Is there a brand out there that you wish you had started?
Zadig et Voltaire. I love that brand. For me it just define the french rock’n’roll chick, la parisienne. I just love it, lace and leather, it is totally my style.
If you could live the life of any other designer for a day, who would you choose?
Awww, hard choices! I will say Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander Mcqueen, because their creations are art to me.
What goals do you have as a designer?
I want to extend to bags and belts. I want to be able to work with tribes around the world also, and be able to create a big community of creation. I want to help people to unveil their passion.
What motivates you?
My daughter. I am a single mum, so we are very close to each other. She is teaching me everyday.
What is your life motto?
Live in the present moment. Be in love with yourself. Never stop dreaming. When life gets a bit hard, that means it is making place for something bigger, better and more wonderful!
